Action Needed :: School Zone Expansion Faulkland & Centerville :: Bus Stops Added Stonycrest & Tybrook

Action Needed :: School Zone Expansion Faulkland & Centerville :: Bus Stops Added Stonycrest & Tybrook

We're writing on behalf of families residing in the Marbrook Elementary School feeder pattern.

The community is urgently requesting Del-Dot  to immediately  add additional school zone signage and flashing lights at and approaching the Centerville and Faulkland Road intersection .

The intersection at Faulkland & Centerville Road  Needs to be included in a Contiguous School Zone linking the current school zones at Gateway Charter School at St. Catherine of Siena School Zone & Marbrook Elementary School Zone .

Additionally, we're urgently requesting that Del-Dot & Red Clay Consolidated School District Office of Transportation to review the attached maps and the 2 specific areas of concern. The first map highlights the need for bus stops for students residing in Stonycrest and Tybrook neighborhoods.

The intersection at Faulkand and Centerville Road is extremely dangerous with or without a crossing guard.

As you know, our community suffered a tremendous loss of a student who was simply trying to get home from school. The second map shows Greenbank Apartments.

Students who walk from Greenbank Apartments cross busy intersections including the gas station and 7/11 and Elder & Lori Drives.

Finally, we're asking our local legislators and Red Clay to review both local and legislative policies regarding students who live within a mile radius of a school.

We understand and recognize the intent to have children walk to local schools, and many children in connecting and adjacent neighborhoods are able to safely walk to school.

However, no child should have to cross a highway to get to school regardless of whether or not the child lives within a one mile radius.

It is vital for leaders at both the state and local level to mandate bus stops and transportation for any child who would have to walk along or cross a numbered highway in order to get to school.

Delaware Road 34 also known as Faulkand Road was a numbered state highway in New Castle County and where we lost a 10 year old child from Marbrook earlier this week.

Your Prompt attention in these serious matters and obvious deficits in traffic safety is much appreciated and anxiously anticipated .
