Trees on 300 Brookland Ave finally Cut Down

New Castle County cut & trimmed several trees on Brookland Ave .

Trees were a lot worse then we thought .

This is what the inside of branches on the good tree looked like .

Chuck,

Thanks for supervising the removal of the two dying trees, and the five healthy ones, so that everyday now many residents can drive by the permanently scared park easement. Good to know that there’s still tax dollars to be wasted on the selfish wishes of a minority of residents here.

These great trees survived 45 inches of snow and many high winds this year, only to be butchered by ignorance. Internal thinning to create hollow centers is a normal part of many healthy, older trees – new growth occurs on the outside, and the dead inside is removed by insects, making the tree stronger, like a pipe. The picture you sent out is of a strong, healthy piece of wood, from a tree that would have lived another 30 years. Additionally, many forms of wildlife depended on these trees for homes and protection. Even the tree trimmer admitted he hated cutting down healthy trees, unfortunately not enough to stop.

The County cannot be trusted to make good decisions about nature. When the trees by the playground had their leaves scorched by the burning of the plastic jungle gym, they immediately cut the trees down. They did not wait to see if there was any real damage to the trees. Trees survive much worse burning than that, those trees were also healthy and would have been fine. What was done last week is the worst kind of vandalism, the irreversible kind.

Using your mentality, we should cut down all the trees in the park to see what’s on the inside. When someone kills an animal in the park they can be prosecuted. Yet here a few people decide to cut down a bunch of healthy trees, then try to justify it with a picture, which is pathetic, and criminal.

So, thanks for you naïve, uninformed observations, and permanently ruining the park easement for many of us.

Sincerely,

- -Jeff and Susan Rivenbark

Cutting those trees was discussed several times at Civic Club meetings. Had you attended, you would have had amples opportunity to express your views regarding them. Perhaps the trees could have survived longer. And perhaps injuries would have occurred due to the falling branches (evidence of which was plainly visisble from the roadway). Your letter was vicious and uncalled for. I believe you owe an apology to the group. Joyce Grymes

Just remind them the house they live in was built with healthy trees, that many forms of wildlife depended on for their homes and for protection.

I would remind the Rivenbarks that Susan was "president" of the civic association for years, and I never even heard of her holding a meeting. When she finally did, she complained of her position and requested a vote for a new president. If all you ever did was hold even "one" civic association meeting you did more than Susan did in the first 15 years that I lived in Brookland Terrance. Consider the source.

Never say never! Obviously you cannot stick to the point here, or the REAL FACTS, but only attack with your LIES. Susan had meeting roughly every quarter, but NOBODY was interested in supporting the Civic Club back then. NOBODY wanted to do Holiday dinners, Easter egg hunts, or anything besides park clean-ups, and complain about snow removal, and she got apathetic after YEARS of NO SUPPORT from the other commitee members. Betty Stirk, former VP, resigned seconds after Susan said she could no longer fulfill her obligation as president, and resigned the first time. Bill Hammilton took over for approx one year, had no meetings, so Sue was forced to accept the role as president again, and managed to hold this distinguished Civic Club together when NOBODY ELSE would take the reigns, and only ~9 people would attend each meeting, for a total of 12years. Pity that you totally distort the facts (LIE!) on past elected officials, when what we were discussing was the butchering of healthy trees for NO REASON! But we do sign our names, and are not COWARDS who hide behind LIES and ANONYMITY.

Not sure who got off the subject here and attacked the Riverbarks, but I do agree with his/her last sentence -"consider the source". Don't know what Chuck Stirk does for a living, but Sue Riverbark is a Longwood Gardens-trained professional gardener, and the tree trimmer is a licensed profession, so I would take their word over Mr Stirk's regarding the health and viability of these trees. According to the slammer, doing something wrong and cutting down perfectly healthy trees is better than not doing anything. Hmm. No, that doesn't make any sense!
