Ninth District Update : Newark Town Center, Royal Farms & more

January 15, 2013

Newark Town Center
The Newark Town Center is a proposed 344,674 square foot shopping center at the northwest corner of Capitol Trail (Route 2) and Possum Park Road (DE Route 72).  The property is currently zoned "S" (Suburban Residential) and the developer is proposing to rezone to CR (Commercial Regional).  This project received a negative recommendation from the Planning Board, therefore, it would need a super-majority vote from Council for approval.

After changing some minor details to the plan, it has been found to be acceptable to proceed to New Castle County Council for consideration by the Department of Land Use.  The plan is scheduled to come before the Land Use Committee on Tuesday, February 5th at 3:00 P.M.  The meeting is held in the 8th floor conference room at the City/County building (800 N. French Street, Wilmington, 19801).  This is when most of the discussion and questions are addressed before Council as a whole.  It would be important to attend and express any concerns relating to this project before Council.  The following Tuesday (February 12th), it will be voted on at the Council meeting.  The meeting starts at 7 P.M. and is held in the first floor Council Chambers at the City/County building.

A Royal Farms is proposed at the northwest corner of Duncan Road and Kirkwood Highway.  Currently it is occupied by the Sunoco gas station.  Their intention is to demolish the current gas station and the dwelling behind it to construct a 5,125 square foot convenience store with fuel pumps.  They will be coming before the Planning Board to amend deed restrictions that would allow them to do this.  The Planning Board Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5th in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Gilliam Building (77 Reads Way, New Castle, 19720) beginning at 7 P.M.  Please attend to express your concerns on the project. This will be the only chance to have your voice publicly heard since it is a minor plan and will NOT be coming before New Castle County Council for approval.

New Castle County Police Explorer Program
Do you know a teenager (ages 14-20) who is interested in a career in law enforcement?  New Castle County Police is holding an open house for their Explorer Program on Saturday, January 19th in the Sweeney Conference Room of the Public Safety Building (3601 North Dupont Highway, New Castle, 19720) beginning at 1:00 P.M.  It is requested that you arrive 15 minutes early.  Youth under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Police Explorers Program is designed for young men and women who have a "sincere interest" in careers in the filed of law enforcement.  The Program offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth.  The program meets one Saturday and one Wednesday evening of every month.
