COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is continuing to spread throughout the United States. There have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 to date and the general health risk to most Delawareans is low. However, our Division of Public Health is closely monitoring the situation and getting our state prepared.
Right now, Division of Public Health is:
- Staying in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as other local and national partners to share information.
- Sending information to health care providers around the state with current recommendations for screening and testing for COVID-19, as well as to EMS providers regarding proper protection procedures.
- Holding frequent calls with staff and our state and health care provider partners to remain apprised of the latest updates.
- Sharing messaging with partners and the public as it becomes available.
- This is a rapidly evolving situation, so information and recommendations are likely to change quickly as well. We will continue to learn more in the coming days and share new information as it is available.
The best thing to do to help keep yourself and your family healthy is to follow the general rules for preventing all respiratory illnesses like the flu:
- Cover coughs and sneezes;
- Stay home when sick, and avoid other well people;
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
- Clean frequently touched surfaces often.
- For flu-prevention – get the flu vaccine.
- The Division of Public Health opened a public call center at 1-866-408-1899. For now, the call center will be staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and have a recorded message after-hours.
- DPH also will receive public email inquiries and questions at dphcall@delaware.gov.
DPH also issued updated guidance for monitoring returning travelers as new countries have been added to the list of countries with Coronavirus disease-related travel alerts. Any travelers returning from a country with a Level 2 or higher Travel Alert - China, South Korea, Italy, and Japan - in the last 14 days and who:
- Have fever, cough and/or shortness of breath, should contact DPH at 1-866-408-1899 to discuss next steps. Those who need to call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency should advise dispatchers of your recent travel and symptoms;
- Do not have fever, cough and/or shortness of breath (asymptomatic travelers), should contact DPH at 1-866-408-1899 for instructions on self-monitoring.
Asymptomatic returning travelers are asked to stay home (no work, school, attending public gatherings) during this 14-day period.
If a returning traveler develops symptoms during this time, and there is no medical emergency, they should contact DPH instead of calling 9-1-1 or visiting a walk-in or urgent-care facility.

Sycamore Avenue Drainage Project
|
|
Sycamore Ave’s drainage project is wrapping up. Thank you to the New Castle Conservation District’s Andy Bowman and Merit Construction Engineers!
Prior to this project there was no functional drainage basins and roof downspouts were dumping runoff against the back of the houses and sometimes into the back doors.
Merit Construction excavated & installed a new drainage system crossing beneath Sycamore Ave at Tamarack Avenue. This pipe connects to the street storm water system.
