Ferris Road Safety Improvements

RE: Ferris Road Safety Improvements

Dear Representative Mitchell and Senator Delcollo:

Thank you for meeting with me early this month to discuss the safety concerns raised by the Brookland Terrace Civic Club and Mr. Covenko along Ferris Road.

As we discussed, the Department is unable to accommodate the request for the installation of guardrail in front ofMr. Covenko's property; however, we have determined other safety measures we can install to minimize future crashes from occurring.

Due to the location of Mr. Covenko's property, guardrail would have to be wrapped around the curve extending onto Woodward Avenue, resulting in eliminating the existing pedestrian access. Additionally, the property's close proximity to the road does not allow for a large enough clear zone behind the guardrail to absorb any impact causing an even greater safety concern.

The concerns the Department observed in our analysis, are the confusion drivers may have navigating the SR 141 and SR 2 split and the ability for vehicles to make a last minute merge onto Ferris Road towards SR 2.
As a result, the Department is moving forward with extending the existing median by adding additional striping and installing delineators which will require vehicles to make the merge onto

Ferris Road earlier and reduce the potential for a last minute exit at a high rate of speed. In addition, the Department will install improved signage along the corridor to clearly indicate the lane designation for the SR 141 and SR 2 split. Attached is an image depicting the new signage and extension of the median through striping and delineators.

The restriping and installation of the delineators will occur in late March, with the installation of the new signage to follow.

Our Traffic Safety staff will continue to monitor the area and the effectiveness of our additional safety measures. If crashes continue to occur with the delineators, we will work towards extending the existing hard median further towards Walnut Avenue.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely,

Deputy Secretary

Nicole D. Majeski
